Friday Freebie: Hook Kids on Computer Science for FREE!

Today's Friday Freebie is a gold mine! Google's new CS First, is a program designed to introduce students to the wonderful world of programming in a fun and engaging way. The intro page on their website states,
"CS First is a Google program focused on increasing student access and exposure to Computer Science (CS) Education through after school, in school, and summer programs. Programs are flexible and can be tailored to fit your schedule.
The goal of CS First is to build the CS education capacity of K-12 schools. With that goal in mind, CS First is open to all grade levels. We have piloted programs primarily in grades 4-8, therefore our current curriculum and materials are mainly targeted towards students in these grades.
CS First is developed by Google, which provides teachers, schools, and volunteers with all the materials needed to lead a CS First program. Staff at local schools set up the programs and have the option to invite volunteers to lead them." (from
The idea is great. The execution is even greater. If you want to join in the fun, you create an account, select a curriculum, decide on a location, schedule your program, and find help. The best thing is that all the curriculum (videos, handouts, materials, etc.) are all ready for you to use. You can download and print your own material, or Google will send copies to you! If you need headphones for students to watch the videos, they'll even loan you those!

The CS First programs that are available all use Scratch, a graphical and easy to learn online programming tool. You can choose from four programs to use in your First program - Music & Sound, Game Design, Fashion, or Storytelling. Each themed unit comes complete with an entire curriculum for an 8 session workshop.

I've already signed up and we'll start our Middle School program in the spring. Start your club today!
